European Power Supply Statistics
The EMEA market for power supplies is forecast to grow by 7.7% in 2011, following strong growth of almost 26% in 2010. This level of growth was far greater than many manufacturers had anticipated following the severe regional decline of 26.0% in 2009. For many manufacturers, this led to a shortage of available capacity and difficulty in sourcing materials, particularly semiconductor devices. In turn this led to their being unable to fulfil all the 2010 orders; some of the projected growth in 2011 will be fulfilment of these orders.
Some niche markets, such as power supplies used in solid state lighting, are forecast to perform well; as demand for LED lighting from various applications continues to increase. Although the Americas and Asia markets make up the largest part of the total market for LED street lighting, demand from the EMEA market will be strong over the coming years. On a negative note, the Universal Charging Solution is projected to enter the market in 2012, which will drive handset manufacturers and mobile service providers to stop shipping chargers with new mobile phones. Whilst the impact of this will not be immediate, as the solution is predicted to be rolled out in stages, IMS Research projects there will be a 6% decline in the total shipments of all power adapters and chargers in 2015, with shipments of chargers for mobile phones being much more severe. This will ultimately lead to a marked decline in year-on- year revenue growth in both 2014 and 2015.
