The European Power Supplies Manufacturers' Association  UKEIG   was formed in 1995 to represent the specialist needs of the power supply industry in Europe. The association currently has around 25 members from ten countries, employing over 8,000 people and with combined global revenues exceeding 5 billion Euros. Our mission statement:

'Promoting the Power Supply industry in Europe and Supporting its Users'

EPSMA Vice Chairman Manfred Schlenk to present a seminar at PCIM - Subject USB-PD - Trends Technologies and Solutions

Standardization as well regulations for external power supplies have been driven further. The European Community has declared as a first step that the so-called USB-C-connector is to be standard for all future power adapters and devices.

In the last years the main applications for USB-PD have been mobile phones and notebooks and the output voltage range was defined from 3.3V to 20V with an output power up to 65W. The challenging goal was and is to reach extremely high efficiencies with very high-power densities, up to 30W/in³. Digital control, GaN-switches and improved topologies make this possible. Today output power levels from 100W up to 240W with power densities over to 40W/in³ are under discussion, requiring the use of PFC-stages. Intelligent digital control methods, highly efficient magnetics and semiconductors as well as operating frequencies up to several kHz are also needed. Besides this it becomes more and more challenging to reach the required low standby power consumption.

The extended power range is now covered in a new so-called USP-PD-EPR-standard (Extended Power Range). The output voltage range is expanded up to 48V and the output power range up to 240W. With this, applications such as wireless charging, multiple outputs, battery charging for ebikes, etc. could be covered.

In the seminar, an overview of trends, worldwide regulations and requirements will be given.  The USB-PD communication between adaptor and device - one of key features - will be explained and new highly-efficient power stages will be presented. In detail the seminar will cover the following topics:

1)    Market information, trends and regulations
2)    USB-PD Conversion including EPR using programmable controllers
3)
New technologies for high efficiency and high-density AC-DC adapters
4)    Novel asymmetrical HB topology for EPR
5)    Novel multiport USB-C-adapter
6)    Extending Qi-based wireless charging to 50W

The seminar will be held on Monday, May 8th as a part of this year´s PCIM . Detailed information can be found in the attached link. https://pcim.mesago.com/nuernberg/en/conference/seminars_tutorials.html#/?day=2023-05-08
